MEMBERSHIP LION PRESIDENT CHARTS COURSE FOR GROWTH
Gerri Madill, President
 |
The International Association of
Lions Clubs began as a dream of Chicago businessman Melvin Jones. Just 3
years after its formation, the association became international when the first
club was established in Canada in 1920.
In 1925 Helen Keller
addressed the Lions International Convention and asked that
they become Knights of the Blind. Since that date Lions Clubs
world wide have been involved in service to the blind and visually
impaired. In 1990 Lions launched a US $143 million program
“Campaign Sight First”,
to help rid the world of
preventable and reversible blindness by supporting desperately needed
health care services.
Campaign Sight First II was
launched in 2005 after funds from the first campaign were mostly used
up. This 3 year program ended June 2008 and raised over $200
million US dollars to again be used in getting rid of
preventable blindness such as river blindness and reversible blindness
such as cataracts. The Saskatoon Nutana Club pledging $6,000 to this cause." In addition to sight services,
Lions also assist with services to youth, improving the environment, support
diabetes education, conduct hearing programs and, through their foundation,
provide disaster relief around the world.
